Logan Seavey Dominates at Bloomington

By James Zimmerman

BLOOMINGTON, IN – Passing was in the abundance Friday night, but no one could pass Logan Seavey. On a night where drivers such as Jacob Denney charged from 19th to 4th, Kevin Thomas Jr went from 17th to 8th, Cannon McIntosh started 12th to finish 3rd to round out the podium, and drivers like Zack Wigal and Justin Grant moved forward from the back of the field. No one had anything for Sutter, California’s Logan Seavey.

The storylines for Friday night were definitely plentiful. But Seavey deserved to be the headliner. If you would have asked Seavey and his Abacus team back on Monday night how many midget races they were going to run during Midget Week they probably would have said their focus was going to be on the sprint side of things to get ready for Eastern Storm. But Seavey and the team each night have continued putting together solid nights where they keep saying, “Let’s run another.” Now, after 4 nights of Indiana Midget Week, Seavey is sitting 3rd in the mini series points with two races to go.

Bradley Cox set the pace on the opening two laps of the Friday night feature until Logan Seavey charged to the front, running the cushion while Cox and Karter Sarff worked the bottom of the track.

Just prior to Seavey taking the lead, there was near chaos near the front of the field. Entering the exit of turn four, Jacob Boxell started to hop in the turn and hit the rear end of Hayden Reinbold. Boxell’s car started to kick sideways until Zack Wigal attempted to drive under him. Wigal collided with Boxell, and with doing so straightened Boxell’s car in what looked to be a spin in front of the field. Both Boxell and Wigal were able to continue to race on, but it cost them valuable momentum and speed.

As Seavey exited turn two with the lead,  the red lights came on haulting racing due to Justin Grant flipping in the exit of turn four. Grant was running seventeenth at the time and was looking to make a charge after having to start twenty-fourth in the feature due to switching to a backup car.

As the track crews were working on getting Grants car to the work area, both Jacob Boxell and Kyle Jones had to be pushed to the work area. Boxell had a flat tire possibly from prior contact with Wigal, and Jones was involved in Grant’s wreck.

In the middle of turns three and four, Grant’s right rear tire looked to climb over Jones’s left rear causing Grant to bounce down into another car to his inside. Causing contact with that car, shot Grant back up into Jones, that finally sent Grant turning over.

Boxell, Jones, and Grant were all able to make repairs under caution and return back to action.

Just prior to the caution coming out, a championship contender, Jacob Denny, was running nineteenth. The drive of the night was coming, as per the normal anymore with Denny, who, when all said and done, would be the fields hard charger on the night.

With the green flying again at the twenty-six laps to go mark, Seavey continued to lead the field while Bradley Cox started to be swarmed by Kale Drake, Drake Edwards, and Hayden Reinbold, all trying to reach the final podium spot. On the entrance of turn three, Zack Wigal, who was running seventh, had his car get sideways and slide up and over the cushion. Those unfamiliar with Bloomington should know there are no walls around the outside of the track. If you get up and over the curb, you could slide down the outside incline. With doing so, you could possibly have the opportunity to keep your car going and rejoin the racing field. Wigal wasn’t so lucky. His car came to a rest at the bottom of the turn outside of turn four, drawing a caution.

Now, with Wigal back on the racing surface and at the tail of the field and running twenty-fourth, Seavey leads the field back to green. This green flag run Seavey seemed to start pulling away.

On the restart, Kake Drake was able to make the pass on Cox and Reinbold to take over third place.

Now, with twenty-one to go, another car gets up over the cushion, which slides down off of the track, causing the yellow flag to fly. This time, it’s Brecken Reese that is sitting outside of the turn waiting for a push vehicle to get him back to the racing surface.

One green flag later, we have our fourth caution of the night due to Gavin Miller and Gunner Setser coming together in turns three and four. The previous set of turns the KKM car of Gavin Miller made contact with teammate Jacob Denny as they were battling for the bottom, on corner exit.

Both Setser and Miller went to the work area and returned to tag the tail of the field.

Ten laps in and twenty to go, Seavey restarts the field, firing off of the top of turn four and then drops to the bottom entering turn one. Now, as the field has gotten ten laps in, the majority of the field is trying to glue their cars to the bottom of one and two in hopes of staying in the moisture for better drive off. Drivers like Kevin Thomas Jr, Zack Wigal, Justin Grant, and Jacob Denny are moving all over and making gains.

On the next set of green‑flag laps, Seavey still couldn’t shake Sarff. The pair stayed within just a couple of car lengths, and Sarff made sure Seavey knew he was there, showing a nose on corner entry every chance he got.

With eighteen laps remaining, Trevor Cline slowed on the backstretch and brought out yet another caution.

Back under green, the middle of the field was wild with passing. Jacob Denny, who started nineteenth, had climbed to ninth. Kevin Thomas Jr., who rolled off seventeenth, was now in tenth. And Justin Grant who started twenty‑fourth, charged to seventeenth, flipped, restarted twenty‑fourth again had clawed his way back to fifteenth. It was one of those nights no one knew where to watch or could barely keep up with all of the action.

With thirteen to go, the front of the field settled into identical lines. Sarff wasn’t gaining on Seavey, but Seavey wasn’t driving away either. Behind them, the battle for third tightened as Kale Drake tried to fend off closing Cannon McIntosh.

On lap seventeen, Adam Taylor got up over the cushion in turns one and two and slid down the hill, rolling to a stop for another yellow flag.

With twelve laps remaining and coming to eleven, McIntosh muscled his way underneath Drake to take over third. Seavey and Sarff continued to run first and second, unchanged. With six laps to go, Drake committed to the top while now charging Denny hammered the bottom, inching closer each lap. Denny finally completed the pass to take over fourth, continuing his now‑routine charges through the field. With five to go, Denny and McIntosh began to battle. McIntosh was quicker down the straightaways but Denny could keep McIntosh reeled in through the corners.

After taking the white flag, Seavey appeared to have the race won. Until a caution flew. Mack Leopard and Hayden Reinbold made contact, sending Reinbold sideways at the entrance of turn one. Matt Sherrell and Justin Grant, running ninth and tenth, had nowhere to go. Grant appeared to spin a full 360 above the cushion trying to keep his car rolling.

Unfortunately it capped off a brutal night for Grant and the CB Industries crew. After qualifying an uncharacteristic nineteenth, Grant transferred through his heat only for the team to switch to a backup car, sending him to the tail of the feature. He worked to seventeenth, flipped, restarted twenty‑fourth, charged to ninth, and then was collected in the late‑race incident that ended his night for good. With doing so this was two straight nights of feature trouble that cost the national points leader and knocking him from the top spot. Lincoln Park had KTJ with a blown motor and now JG posting his first DNF on the year.

After coming within half a lap of the checkered flag, Seavey now had to survive a two‑lap shootout. He got a strong jump and lead as Sarff and McIntosh beat banged on each other for second place. Seavey took the white flag again, only for another caution to fly as Leopard again got up over the cushion in turn four and came to a stop. It was the last thing Seavey wanted to see. Forced to do it all over again, Seavey lined up for a second two‑lap dash. This time, the field stayed green, and Seavey delivered two more great laps to finally secure the Bloomington victory. There was no doubt with surviving restart after restart Seavey, earned this one.

Sarff finished second, McIntosh completed the podium in third, and Jacob Denny capped off another remarkable drive with a fourth‑place finish after starting nineteenth. As always, Denny finds speed and carves through traffic.

Karter Sarff has been on a tear, winning on a previous night and placing second at Bloomington

Also, someone finally tonight went quick time in Indiana Midget Week that wasn’t named Karter Sarff.
